IFS Therapy in Nashville & Mt. Juliet, TN
Internal Family Systems — for the parts of you that are exhausted, and the parts that keep pushing anyway.
You are not one voice. There's the part of you that wants rest and the part that calls you lazy for wanting it. IFS helps you understand those parts instead of fighting them — so the war inside finally has somewhere to go.

Internal Family Systems — usually shortened to IFS — was developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz in the 1980s and has since become one of the most widely used trauma-informed approaches in therapy. It was recognized as an evidence-based practice by SAMHSA.
IFS starts from an observation most people recognize immediately: the mind isn't a single unified voice. It's more like a room full of them. There's the part of you that wants to set a boundary and the part that's certain you'll be abandoned if you do. The part that's desperate for rest and the part that says resting means falling behind. We describe this constantly in ordinary language — “part of me feels one way, but another part…” — and then treat it as a figure of speech.
IFS treats it as literal, and useful. Those parts aren't flaws or symptoms to be eliminated. Every one of them took its job at some point because it was trying to protect you, usually when you were young and genuinely needed protecting. The inner critic that's so exhausting now may have started out trying to keep you safe from someone else's criticism.
Underneath all of them, IFS holds that there is a Self — a calm, clear, compassionate core that isn't damaged, no matter what happened to you. It doesn't need to be built or earned. It gets crowded out. The work of therapy is clearing enough space that it can lead again.
What IFS Looks Like in Sessions
IFS sessions are quieter and more internally focused than you might expect. Rather than recounting your week in detail, I'll often ask you to notice what's happening inside as you talk — a tightening in your chest, a flat numbness, a voice that shows up the moment you consider doing something for yourself.
From there we get curious rather than corrective. What is this part worried would happen if it stopped doing its job? Parts almost always have an answer, and it's usually a reasonable one given what they've lived through. Being genuinely heard — often for the first time — is frequently the thing that allows a part to relax its grip.
Nothing is forced. We don't override protective parts or push past them to get to painful material underneath. If a part isn't ready, that's information we work with, not an obstacle. This is a large part of why IFS tends to feel safe even when the material is heavy.
What IFS Helps With
IFS is especially useful when you already understand your patterns intellectually and they still haven't changed.
The Relentless Inner Critic
If the voice in your head speaks to you in a way you'd never speak to anyone else, IFS offers something better than trying to silence it — understanding what it's so afraid of, which is usually what finally softens it.
Trauma & Protective Patterns
The strategies that kept you safe then — shutting down, staying small, achieving relentlessly, keeping everyone happy — often cost you now. IFS works with those strategies rather than against them.
Burnout & People-Pleasing
When you cannot stop over-functioning even though it's depleting you, there's usually a part convinced that slowing down is dangerous. Knowing you should rest has never been enough to make rest possible.
Feeling At War With Yourself
Stuck decisions, self-sabotage, the sense of pulling in two directions at once. When parts of you want opposite things, no amount of willpower resolves it — but negotiation between them can.
IFS Alongside Other Approaches
I rarely use a single model in isolation. IFS integrates especially well with:
- EMDR — IFS builds internal safety and gets protective parts on board first, which often makes trauma processing significantly less overwhelming
- DBT skills — for the distress tolerance and regulation that make deeper internal work sustainable between sessions
- Perinatal work — new parenthood reliably activates old parts; IFS is remarkably effective for the guilt, rage, and identity upheaval that surface in that season
