What Is Walk and Talk Therapy?
Walk and talk therapy is exactly what it sounds like: therapy sessions that happen outdoors, on a trail, while walking side-by-side. It's not a nature walk with your therapist — it's a full therapeutic session, with the same professional standards, confidentiality, and clinical intention as an office visit.
Research supports what many people already know intuitively: movement and nature support mental health. Gentle physical activity can reduce anxiety, lift mood, and create a neurological state that's actually more conducive to certain kinds of emotional processing than sitting still in an office. Walking side-by-side can also reduce the intensity of direct eye contact, which many clients find makes it easier to talk about difficult things.
Why Walking Works
- Accessibility — For clients who find traditional office settings intimidating or clinical, the outdoor setting lowers the barrier to showing up.
- Anxiety reduction through movement — Gentle physical activity naturally regulates the nervous system, making it easier to access and process difficult emotions.
- Grounding in nature — Being outdoors activates the body's parasympathetic nervous system, supporting calm and presence.
- Side-by-side conversation — Not making direct eye contact the entire session can actually make it easier to talk about vulnerable things.
- Stroller compatible — New parents can bring their babies without childcare logistics.
